Becoming a mentor to the students at Bethune elementary with Mr. Ray’s second grade class has been a rewarding opportunity for me. Being a mentor for all of these children helps bring my energy and spirits up and has helped me to remember to enjoy the simple things in life. It has also been a eye opening experience for me because many of the students that we engage with come from low income neighborhoods and are going through their own personal struggles at home. It is evident as many of the fights that break out during class that many of the students are troubled and are going through many personal issues. Therefore, being there has allowed me me the opportunity to be a mentor of such to many of the students I have bonded well with a number of the students. It took some time though because at first they would only refer to me as “Morehouse.” but now I guess I can say I have earned my right to be called by name. I am more than happy that we have selected Bethune Elementary as our service site and I believe that I have benefited more from my mentoring than I would have ever imagined.
